This Masters Degree Programme is based on the research work carried out at DUCIS (Dalarna University Centre for Irish Studies) at Dalarna University. The programme started in 2004 when DUCIS was first established and is run by the English Department. Since then about 50 students have successfully completed the programme, and many of these former students have gone on to do further research in this area or work as teachers of English at universities all over the world.

Who should study English with Specialisation in Irish Literature?

Successful candidates to the programme are those who are interested in becoming part of the international field of Irish Studies, or who have a general interest in literature and culture. The programme is suitable for students with a bachelors degree with a major in English, Comparative Literature, or similar fields. Documented good command of both oral and written English is required. More details regarding prerequisites can be found in the right menu.

The programme is a Masters Programme in English with Specialisation in Irish Literature (60 credits). All courses are taught in English. After passing all courses, including the thesis work, the student is awarded the Degree of Master of Arts in English with Specialisation in Irish Literature (60 credits). The programme comprises 60 credits (1 credit = 1 ECTS) and begins at the end of August, which is the start of the autumn semester.

Programme Structure and Content:
Semester 1 (Autumn) - Late August to Mid-January

* Modernism, Postmodernism and Postcolonialism (EN3038)
* Contemporary Irish Fiction (EN3029) 7.5
* The Body and Desire in Contemporary Irish Poetry (EN3030)
* Scholarly Writing in Literary Theory and Criticism (EN3014)

Semester 2 (Spring) - Late January to Mid-June

* Ireland in Film and Drama (EN3028)
* Advanced Literary Theory (EN3058)
* Degree Thesis with Focus on Irish Literature (EN3053)

* 1 credit = 1 ECTS

* All courses are mandatory.
* 1.5 credits corresponds to one week of full-time studies.
* 60 credits corresponds to one year of full-time studies.
* All courses can be taken as web-based courses and studied at either 100%, 50% or 25% study rate. Note that the degree you will get is called a One-Year Master even if it takes you longer to finish your studies.

Bachelor degree of at least 180 ECTS credits with English (literature) or Literature as major or the equivalent.
