Description

This program is an integral part of regional, rural and national environmental sustainability. It provides a strong scientific understanding of global environmental issues and well-developed technical and scientific competencies in field and laboratory related to: ecological principles and methods, land and environmental impact assessment, design and analysis of experiments and surveys, and spatial measurement, mapping and analysis.

The BEnvSc produces graduates of high quality, who will be valued for their expertise in basic scientific disciplines and for their ability to apply their knowledge to cross-disciplinary areas, especially those relating to environmental issues.

They will have opportunities to undertake a wide choice of elective units in soil, ecological restoration, conservation biology, water, wildlife or vegetation. The Bachelor of Environmental Science also provides a specialisation or major in Management where additional skills in project management, natural resources policy, land, wildlife and water management can be obtained. A fourth year is required for Honours.

Examples include positions in museums and herbaria, zoos and botanic gardens, commercial industry and government planning departments, environmental protection agencies, national parks and wildlife management, forestry, water and soil conservation, environmental consultancies conducting impact statements and assessments, mining (rehabilitation, waste control and treatment); research careers with CSIRO, university and industries.

Course Content

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:

  • (a) three years as a full-time candidate;
  • (b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including shall be awarded the Bachelor of Environmental Science.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 48 credit points.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in The Sciences on completion of 72 credit points.

Requirements

For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by the University of New England, international applicants must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia.

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

Assumed knowledge is Mathematics and recommended knowledge is Biology and/or Chemistry

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Chemistry and Mathematics
