European Philosophy at Royal Holloway offers students the opportunity to explore the rich and diverse intellectual traditions of the European philosophical tradition from antiquity to the modern era. This programme provides an in-depth understanding of key philosophical movements, influential thinkers, and foundational texts that have shaped Western thought. Students will examine core areas such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, and the history of philosophy, with particular emphasis on European contributions to these fields. The course is designed to develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and a sophisticated appreciation for philosophical debates and methodologies. Through a combination of lectures, seminars, and independent research, students are encouraged to engage actively with challenging philosophical ideas, question assumptions, and develop their own reasoned perspectives. The programme also explores the intersection of philosophy with other disciplines such as literature, history, and the arts, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of European philosophical thought. Throughout the degree, students will have opportunities to study major texts in their original languages and to immerse themselves in the cultural and historical contexts that gave rise to European philosophical developments. The programme prepares graduates for a variety of careers, including academia, education, public policy, journalism, and fields requiring high-level critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students benefit from the university’s strong research environment, distinguished faculty, and access to extensive resources, all of which support a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of European philosophy.
