Brunel University London's MA/MMus Experimental Music is the UK's first Masters programme in Experimental Music and offers you the opportunity to develop your own programme of study, based around your particular interests in contemporary music-making.

As a postgraduate student of MA/MMus Experimental Music you will be able to take advantage of the presence of postgraduate community in your practice based work.

Aims

Studying this master's degree enables you to develop a comprehensive and sophisticated understanding of a range of practical and theoretical approaches to contemporary musical materials, and of their historical and cultural contexts.

You are encouraged to foster an advanced creative and critical engagement with issues in contemporary music practice whilst building the skills and knowledge necessary for employment in the music industry as performers, composers, improvisers and/or commentators.

Typical modules available on MA/MMus Experimental Music are:

Locating Practice (30 credits)An investigation of the theoretical and technical bases, and the contemporary context, of your individual practice as composers, improvisers, musicologists, performers or sonic artists.

Experimental Music Techniques (30 credits)You will study techniques in composition, improvisation, musicology, performance or sonic arts within your own creative and/or critical practice.

Experimental Music Portfolio (30 credits) A series of student-directed short projects, developing creative and/or critical ideas which will form the basis for your master's Major Project.

Major Project (90 credits) A practical project will lead to your being awarded the degree of MMus; a dissertation to the award of MA.

To study the Experimental Music MA/MMus course, students must possess a UK first or second class (2:1) UK Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification usually in Music, Music Technology, or a related arts discipline.Other qualifications and relevant professional or practical experience will be assessed on an individual basis.Applicants will be required to attend an interview.English Language RequirementsIELTS: 7 (min 6 in all areas)Pearson: 64 (51 in all subscores)BrunELT: 70% (min 60% in all areas) English Language Requirements IELTS band: 7 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.
