Description

A good grounding in Economies, Market and Enterprise and Managerial Finance accompanies Fashion Design, Pattern Cutting and Garment Development in Year 1. With much of the practical work done in the University's fully equipped Fashion Factory.

In Year 2, a supervised work placement in a relevant sector plus integrated design project provides practical experience of standard industry equipment including Computer Aided Design (CAD).

In the later years of study, there's a chance to apply your personal knowledge of commerical considerations to The Fashion Design Portfolio and Fashion Collections and Promotions modules, often culminating in an end-of-term runway show.

Throughout the programme you will participate in fashion shows and competitions and visit exhibitions and trade fairs.

The dual nature of this programmes means that graduates are highly sought after as designers, buyers, merchandisers, pattern technologists, garment technologists, production managers, retail managers and wardrobe assistants.

Many of our graduates have found employment with major retailers such as Arcadia, online companies including ASOS and local manufacturers, Trespass and MJM Intenrational. Overseas posts include Fashion Forecasting for Promostyl n Paris, Fashion Editor of L'Officiel in Dubai and freelance fashion stylise in New York.

Course Content

Year 1: Introduction to the modules such as Fashion and Design, Pattern Cutting and Garment Development supported with business modules in Economies, Market and Enterprise, and Managerial Finance.

Year 2: Opportunity to undertake the module Supervised Work Placement in a selected area of the fashion industry combined with integrated design project using industry standard equipment, Computer Aided Design.

Year 3: Scope to apply your personal design vision and apply within the constraints of commercial requirments on The Fashion Design Portfolio and, Fashion Collections and Promotion modules. Investigation into general fashion based retail marketing is also explored.

Year 4: The module Range Design Industry is a live industry fashion project to develop practical and technical skills within market constraints. The Honours dissertaion develops further indepenent research project on a topic relating to the fashion industry.

Language: Language modules are available to study during part of the programme.

Assessment: Assessment is based on a combination of coursework and examinations.

Essential subjects: English and Art & Design (Higher/GCSE/ILC-H), GCSE Textiles accepted if Art & Design is not studied.
