Description

This programme aims to assist you in the ability to develop, evaluate and explain appropriate fire protection and management systems. The modules in the early years focuses on the disciplines which underpin the design and evaluation of fire protection systems for buildings. There is also an emphasis on the development of problem-solving and communication skills as well as the application of theoretical principles and techniques. Students may graduate after Year 3 or progress to Honours where you will study the design of fire protection systems and advanced risk analysis techniques and apply these in a Risk Evaluation Project. Computer modelling is used extensively throughout the programme.

The programme, originally developed in close partnership with Strathclyde Fire Brigade, is unique in its focus and one of a limited number of fire engineering programmes in the UK. Risk management, forecasting, problem-solving and communication are all essential components of your learning, as is the ability to specify performance levels of buildings when you assess them. It is designed to meet the needs of consultants, building control practitioners and fire service officers in a rapidly evolving design, engineering and regulatory environment. The programme team has strong links with consultants and regulators who support the programme through guest lectures, case study material and site visits. The programme also benefits from the input of Strathclyde Fire Rescue Officers who are associate lecturers.
