Program Description:

The Gender and Women's Studies program at Brandon University offers students a comprehensive and interdisciplinary exploration of gender, sexuality, and women’s issues within cultural, social, political, and historical contexts. This program is designed to foster critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deeper understanding of the complex ways in which gender identities and experiences shape individuals and societies. Through a diverse curriculum, students examine topics such as feminism, gender inequality, LGBTQ+ concerns, media representation, and intersectionality, preparing them for active engagement in social justice, advocacy, education, and community development sectors.

At Brandon University, the program emphasizes an inclusive, intersectional approach that considers race, class, ethnicity, ability, and other social factors influencing gendered experiences. Students have the opportunity to participate in research projects, internships, and community-based learning to gain practical skills and real-world perspectives. The program encourages critical engagement with current issues, fostering awareness and empowering students to become effective advocates for equality and social change.

Whether pursuing the major or a minor, students are encouraged to develop analytical approaches that challenge traditional narratives and promote diversity and inclusion. The curriculum includes courses in feminist theory, gendered violence, women’s history, and contemporary social issues, many of which are taught by faculty actively engaged in research and activism. Graduates of the Gender and Women's Studies program acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in education, social services, government, arts and media, and nonprofit organizations, as well as for further academic pursuits.

Brandon University’s supportive academic community provides an environment where students can explore their interests, build critical perspectives, and connect with faculty and peers committed to social justice. The program is ideal for those passionate about understanding and advocating for gender equality, and it positions graduates to make meaningful contributions to a more equitable society.
