The consecutive, research-oriented Master's course builds upon the Bachelor's course in physics. The prescribed period of study is two years (120 credit points). Entry into the double-degree programme is only possible at the beginning of each winter semester. Students spend the first year at Freie Universität Berlin and the second year at École Polytechnique.
As a compulsory component of the study programme, the advanced fundamentals of modern experimental and theoretical physics are taught. Within this part, the following modules are to be completed:
First year (Berlin):
In addition, students must choose one of the following modules (10 ECTS credit points):
As an elective part of the studies (25 ECTS credit points), students can choose further modules from the above list, from the schedule of modules listed below (not all modules are offered in every year), or from modules offered by other departments:
Second year (Paris):

- Physics laboratory practical course for Master's students (10 ECTS credit points)

- A scientific research phase of 12 months in a work group
- During the first six months in parallel: lectures of an M2 programme in physics offered by École Polytechnique (25 ECTS credit points)
- French language and culture (5 ECTS credit points)
