The Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics trains you to apply your knowledge of language in diverse settings, including teaching, translation, journalism and media, language policy and planning, website design and socio-educational development.
Engage with international experts in the fields of functional linguistics, world English, language and culture and media discourse. Attend seminars on a range of applications of linguistics, including educational linguistics, TESOL, clinical linguistics, forensic linguistics, and translation and interpreting.

You will be taught by experts in applied linguistics with strengths in world English, media discourse, functional linguistics, language and culture and electronic communication.

Study plan

The Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics requires the satisfactory completion of:

(a) A minimum of 36 credit points of core units of study; and

(b) A maximum of 12 credit points from elective units of study

Admission to candidature for the Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics requires completion of the requirements for the Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics with a minimum credit (65%) average, or an equivalent qualification; or a bachelor's degree with a minimum 60% average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, including a major in a relevant subject area, or an equivalent qualification; or a bachelor's degree with a minimum 60% average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, in any subject area, or an equivalent qualification, and either:

  •  a relevant professional qualification; or
  •  recent, relevant, professional experience.

IELTS: A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band TOEFL paper-based: A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing TOEFL IBT: A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 17 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 19 in Writing
