Greek with Latin

This programme offers the opportunity to develop expertise in two ancient languages simultaneously, while developing a sophisticated critical approach to the ancient world through essay work. Students will focus on Greek in years two and three, following more modules in this language.

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individual modules, normally valued at 0.5 or 1.0 credits, adding up to a total of 4.0 credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year in which they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modules varies from programme to programme and year to year. A 1.0 credit is considered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).

The main emphasis of the programme is on the study of Latin and Greek texts in the original language. The choice of optional modules is very wide, but the language element follows a set pattern.

You must take at least 1.0 credit of Latin-based modules and at least 1.0 credit of Greek-based modules in your first year, and can then concentrate on Greek-based modules in your second and third years.

In addition, there are some compulsory modules in the first and second years involving texts in translation.
