Geography is the core environmental discipline that studies physical and human environments and their interactions. Geography combines social and natural science knowledge, theory and methods. It is basic to understanding the dynamics of environmental issues, resource use, abuse and management. urban and regional development and planning, globalization and its local impacts, and other vital topics. Many Geographers specialize in digital mapping and spatial data analysis of natural environments and human characteristics. Geography is an extraordinarily diverse discipline that provides students with a wide range of concepts, knowledge and methods for understanding natural and social environments. Following lower level requirements in all areas of the discipline, students can focus on courses in either the natural or social sciences, or some combination of both. Human Geography is a social science that investigates the nature, organization and distribution of human activities and the nature of human-environment relationships at varying spatial scales, from the global to local communities. At SFU the key branches of human geography are urban geography, social geography, economic and resource geography, and development geography.
