Description

A new machine speeds up the production process in a factory. But what about the costs? How will employees react when old machines are taken away and they have to work with new, complicated machinery?

In the degree programme in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM), you learn to approach things from the perspective of the technology as well as the organization.

In search of usable solutions

Industrial Engineering and Management involves translating new technologies into usable solutions. You look beyond the technology. You analyse the problem, design a solution and consider the business aspects: finance, planning, logistics, people.

Is IEM for you?

You are interested in technology and you want to work with people. You feel at home with mathematics, physics and chemistry, but you don't want to focus exclusively on the exact sciences. You want to incorporate solutions and design as well as carry out research and analysis. You enjoy working with people and experiencing the dynamics of an organization.

Interested in technology and more?

The degree programme provides a solid grounding in technology and a sound knowledge of business and management. This combination equips you for a career in a wide range of areas; it does not restrict you to a specific field.

Job perspectives

Once you have completed the three-year Bachelor's programme and have your degree, you can continue with the Master's degree programme to study your field in greater depth. A Bachelor's degree in IEM qualifies you for the Master's degree programme in IEM at Groningen, or the equivalent at another university. You can find work in many organizations, from multinationals to consultancy firms. A graduate in industrial engineering and management is at home in organizations that focus on innovation.

That means not only having confidence in existing solutions, but also searching for new possibilities by integrating technologies.

If you graduate in Production Technology and Logistics...

The obvious career path is to work in a large factory where your task will be to improve the production process (e.g. a car factory). Or you could choose another path. You could work at a hospital, researching how medical investigation equipment can be used more effectively and efficiently. A career with a consultancy firm is also a possibility.

If you graduate in Product Technology…

A degree in this specialization qualifies you for positions in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Potential employers include Shell and DSM. Because you have a grounding in business studies, you will be more employable in a management position than a technical designer or chemical engineer.

Specialisations / Tracks

  • Production Technology and Logistics (PTL)(specialization)

In the field of industrial engineering and management, 'discrete' means individually separate, distinct.

It refers to finished products that are distinct items that can be counted, touched or seen (e.g. a mobile telephone, an aeroplane or a stapler). You study the production process, the logistics and the control engineering.

  • Product Technology (PT)(specialization)

This young discipline involves the study of the process that leads from materials to an end product. Many of these end products are made from oil.

PT also plays an important role in the pharmaceutical industry and the dairy industry (e.g. producing chocolate desserts from milk).

The Groningen science and engineering programmes stand out for their academic excellence. The work pace in the first year is generally high and the courses contents demanding. The first year curriculum concentrates on laying a sound basis for our engineering and natural science disciplines. This allows our students to chooise their specialisation tracks already in their second Bachelor's year.

Example course units in the Production technology and logistics track: production techniques, applied manufacturing management, control engineering, digital and hybrid control systems.

Example course units in the Process and product technology track: separation processes, technical thermodynamics, special process equipment, multi-phase reactors.

Study abroad

  • Study abroad is optional
  • Maximum of 30 EC

(Binding) study advice

  • A minimum of 45 EC in the first 12 months ( binding )
  • A minimum of 60 EC in the first 24 months ( binding )

You will be offered study advice after first and second years of study. You can expect a positive result if you have earned more than 45 ECTS credit points (out of a total of 60 ECTS). If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative result, you will not be allowed to continue with your degree programme.

In addition, you are also expected to pass all your first-year exams by the end of your second year of study. If you don't, you will be issued a negative result and will have to leave the degree programme. You will receive preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you stand.

Please contact your study advisor as soon as possible if you have any questions about the BSA system.

N.B. Some degree programmes use a tutoring system; please check with your study advisor.
