Infection Biology is a growing field within Life science that combines immunology, microbiology, molecular biology and cell biology, in order to better understand infectious diseases and be able to better control them in the future. At the University of Skövde, we offer a one-year Master programme in Infection Biology were you will study molecular mechanisms and processes involved in the pathogenesis of different microorganisms as well as the molecular and cellular processes of the immune defense. You will also use laboratory and computer-based techniques that can be applied within the fields of human and animal health. In the programme you will also study the structure of genes and proteins as well as the understanding of their function and regulation. After completed studies
After completing the program you can for example work in pharmaceutical companies or at hospitals. You can also continue with PhD studies or other kind of research at governmental and private research laboratories. Students with a Master Degree in Molecular Biology have got excellent comments and references from the laboratories where they realized their master project works. Most of these students got international PhD-student positions or other jobs soon after finishing their project work. A survey of programme alumni (former students with a degree in Molecular biology) shows that about 80% have a job related to their education. Of these, over 75% got their job within a year after their graduation.
What will you study?
The programme involves in-depth research oriented studies in the areas of Molecular Biology and Infection Biology. Independent laboratory work is a prominent part of the studies. During the first semester of the Master programme you will study advanced courses in infection biology, molecular biology, biostatistics and bioinformatics and their applications in infection biology. Advanced laboratory facilities are employed for DNA and protein analyses such as PCR amplification, cloning, and protein expression. Computational resources are also used for molecular biological and bioinformatic analysis and database searching. The programme is concluded with a master degree project work (30 ECTS credits) in the last semester. During the project work, you will expand your theoretical and laboratory knowledge and solve a relevant research problem in Molecular Biology. The project work is performed individually under the direction of supervisors qualified in the field.
