Investment and Finance

The Masters degree in Investment and Finance is designed for for those who intend to develop careers in areas such as security analysis, portfolio analysis and investment management.

The course is widely regarded as vocationally relevant and intellectually challenging - it will provide you with a rigorous grounding in the theory of finance but also covers the various techniques and analytical tools widely employed by investment professionals in practical decision-taking.

The syllabus has been developed with the requirements of the Chartered Financial Analysts Institute (CFA Institute - the primary professional body) in mind and the course provides a good starting point if you are seeking CFA qualification.

The course will provide participants with:

• an understanding of financial theory and analysis
• an appreciation of the nature of financial markets and institutions
• a good working knowledge of accounting principles and financial statement analysis
• an understanding of the techniques and concepts employed in the valuation of bonds and equities
• the ability to develop portfolios and investment strategies to meet risk-return objectives
• an understanding of derivatives options, futures, swaps, etc
• an understanding of the quantitative analysis and techniques employed in finance

The taught component of the course will be covered in the first two semesters. Both of these semesters will run for twelve weeks. The examinations for all classes will take place at the end of the semester in which they are offered, in January and June respectively.

The distribution of the classes across the two taught semesters is given below. The research component of the course will take up the third (summer) semester. A core class implies that this is compulsory for the programme. All four courses follow a common first semester and each course follows a different second semester introducing the specialisation. All three courses follow a common third semester.

Excellent first degree or other qualification equivalent to Honours degree from a UK university in accounting, economics, business studies or a subject area with a strong quantitative basis.You must also be able to attend the introductory sessions at the end of September 2010.English Language Requirements In addition to academic qualifications, you must also be able to show that you have a sufficient grasp of English. If English is not your first language you will need to provide evidence of your proficiency before you can begin the course, and you are strongly advised to take the IELTS or the TOEFL test examination. The University's general entry requirements are IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 600 (including the Test of Written English), TOEFL 250 (computer based test) and TOEFL 100 (internet based test). English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 600 TOEFL iBT® test: 100 IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. Accreditation

There are three international accrediting bodies for business schools. These are :

• AACSB International - the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, based in the USA
• EQUIS - the quality assurance scheme run by the European Foundation for Management Development (efmd) and based in Brussels
• AMBA - the Association of MBAs, based in the UK
• MSc program is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). Exemptions will be awarded from CIMAs professional examinations, according to the route taken through the MSc.

To achieve accreditation by one of these bodies is an achievement in itself. To achieve accreditation by all three bodies is a truly outstanding accomplishment and one to be proud of.
