This programme aims to meet the needs of graduates and their employers. It is run by a consortium of five UK universities, recognised for their excellence in marine technology education and research: Heriot-Watt, Newcastle, Strathclyde, Southampton and University College London. Normally all students are in full-time, marine-sectored employment.
Careers: Engineering professions; further research
There are eight technology streams available in the MSc and PG Dip programmes (a PG Cert course is also available): Classification and Survey; Conversion and Repair; Defence; General stream; Marine Engineering; Naval Architecture; Offshore Engineering; and Small Craft Design.
Modules are also offered as stand-alone CPD (approved by the Institute of Marine Engineers and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects), which may be suitable for those requiring specific subject training. Teaching is delivered by a combination of distance learning material and one-week intensive schools, with pre-school preparation and post-school assignments for modules, each of which has a credit rating of 10 points and requires 100 hours study time.
Duration: MSc: 25 years; PG Dip: 25 years; PG Cert: 13 years (all distance learning and one-week intensive schools)
Assessment: Coursework, individual project, thesis
Start date: Throughout the year

Accreditation
The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). In addition, the Marine Technology Education Consortium (MTEC) has recently been accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMECHE). MTEC is the only distance learning programme currently offering an accredited MSc in Marine Technology, thereby enabling graduates in the marine industry to obtain chartered engineer status whilst remaining in full-time employment.
