Description
Our professionally accredited three-year Small Craft Technology BEng Honours degree covers aspects of design and operation of small craft including yachts, leisure craft and high speed craft such as catamarans.
In the early Stages of your degree you study a range of topics including ships' internal systems and the design, production and operation of ships.
In your final year, you specialise in small craft technology, with modules in small craft design, small craft powering and marine structures.
The degree responds to the fast growth in this industry and encompasses naval architecture, marine dynamics, propulsion and materials science.

- A Levels
AAB-ABB including Mathematics and preferably Physics and/or Chemistry but excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.- Scottish Qualifications
AAB-ABB at Advanced Higher including Mathematics and preferably Physics. Physics or Chemistry required at Higher Grade B if not offered at Advanced Higher.- International Baccalaureate
34-35 points with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level grade 5 or above.- Irish Leaving Certificate
Candidates will normally only be considered for foundation year entry. Applications will be considered on an individual basis.- Access Qualifications
In a relevant area of engineering or physical science. At least 20 level 3 credits in Mathematics at Distinction including differential and integral calculus. At least 25 level 3 credits in analytical engineering sciences (e.g. Mechanical or Electrical Science/Principles, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electronics etc), ten of which to be achieved at Distinction and the remainder at a minimum of Merit. Remaining credits preferred in Design, IT/CAD and other practical skill-based subjects.- BTEC Level 5 HND
Overall Merit and Distinction grades with Distinctions in mathematics and science units. Units must include both Analytical Methods and Further Analytical Methods or equivalent. Students studying the HND outside the UK, and who have studied subjects corresponding in syllabus and level to Stage 1 of the degree and with Distinction in Mathematics and other engineering subjects, may be considered for Stage 2 entry.- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)
Overall DDD in an engineering discipline, to include Distinctions in Mathematics and analytical science units. All other candidates will be considered for Foundation Year entry.- Cambridge Pre-U

- Foundation Year
If you dont have the right mathematics and/or science qualifications for direct entry, you can take a Marine Technology Foundation Year:
- Marine Technology with Foundation Year BEng Honours (J615)
- Marine Technology with Foundation Year MEng Honours (J616)
This will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three- or four-year Marine Technology degrees.
- International Foundation Programmes
If you are an international student and you do not meet the academic and English language requirements specified above, you should consider a preparation course at INTO Newcastle University, which will help to prepare you for study on this degree course. INTO Newcastle University is based on the University campus and offers a range of courses including the International Foundation in Physical Sciences and Engineering.For this degree you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
