Description

The major in mathematics provides students with a practical and theoretical understanding of the tools, methods, and logical foundations of mathematics. A degree in mathematics is highly regarded in a very broad spectrum of careers, as evidence of a person's ability to think clearly and analytically. Graduates in mathematics are well positioned to pursue careers and/or graduate studies in mathematics, the physical and social sciences, actuarial science and insurance, economics, finance, as well as in any profession such as law or education in which a facility with logic is of value.

Students may also pursue a major in applied mathematics, offered jointly with the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Students in this major are trained to model physical and industrial processes and to solve the resulting mathematical problems by using computational and analytic techniques.

  • Work-study allows students to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable skills - often in their intended field.

  • Rutgers is a member—so are Harvard, Yale, and Berkeley—of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the 61 leading research universities in North America.
  • More than 175 Rutgers research centers support pioneering work in stem cells, climate change, DNA analysis, and more.
