Description

When we think of mathematics, we associate it with figures, numbers and complicated calculations. That is what mathematics is about, but it's also relevant in medicines, economics and other fields.

Obviously, parts of the Mathematics degree programme are similar to mathematics as it is studied at secondary school. But you will also discover new areas such as algebra (number theory and coding), dynamic systems (how predictable is the weather?) and systems theory. Over the centuries, mathematics has made an important contribution to technological progress. It is still crucial to researching and solving current issues such as the climate problem.

Mathematics is a multifaceted subject and an international bachelor. All courses are taught in English which gives Mathematics in Groningen an extra dimension as many of your fellow students and teachers will come from abroad. Some people choose to study Mathematics because its diversity appeals to them. Others perceive the social relevance of mathematics, and choose to do research. And there are students who enjoy mathematics precisely because it involves solving abstract problems.

The University of Groningen offers degree programmes in mathematics as well as applied mathematics. Year 1 is largely the same for both degree programmes, and you can switch between them if you wish. You gradually work towards your specialization.

Job perspectives

Mathematics consists of a broad Bachelor's programme, after which you can specialize with a Master's degree programme. You can then pursue a career in business or continue in the academic world. Other possibilities are science journalism or teaching in a secondary school. Research, advising or teaching… there are many fields open to you, in the Netherlands or abroad!

Business

During your studies you will learn to think logically and construct an argument. Analysing will become second nature to you. It is a skill that is very welcome in the business world. Insurance companies and banks that work with models to assess risk and predict financial developments are keen to employ mathematicians to carry out these analyses. In the SME sector too, mathematicians are becoming equally sought after.

Research

When you have your Master's degree you can carry out PhD research at a university. This will earn you the title of Doctor. Your Master's degree will also qualify you for positions with research institutes such as TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) and the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute).

Teacher

There has been a great demand for mathematicians to work as teachers in secondary education for a long time. After the bachelor mathematics, you can follow the (Dutch-taught) master education & communication.

Specialisations / Tracks

  • General Mathematics (specialization)

In General Mathematics, the emphasis is on the theoretical aspects of mathematics.

It deals with the basic principles of mathematics, as well as the core concepts of classical and modern logic, and the relationship between the natural sciences and philosophy.

Within this specialization there are three fields of interest:

    • Physics – electricity & magnetism, waves & optics, quantum physics
    • Mathematics – chaos theory, security & codes, algebraic structures
    • Logic & philosophy – models, infinity & paradox, philosophy of science
  • Statistics and Econometrics (specialization)

The Statistics & Econometrics specialization focuses on statistics and mathematics as applied in the field of economics.

The subjects range from economic analyses and forecasts to optimum stock management and planning. Courses include Finance Theory and Modelling, Dynamic Econometrics, and Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control.

Programme schedule

Courses year 1

  • Calculus 1,2,3
  • Linear algebra 1,2
  • Computer-assisted problem-solving
  • Probability Theory
  • Propaedeutic project
  • Orientation on BSc Applied mathematics or BSc Mathematics specialisations
  • And more course units, up to 60 ECTS each year (optional)

Courses year 2

  • Complex analysis
  • Metric spaces
  • Group theory
  • Course units of chosen specialisation (15 ECTS)
  • Numerical mathematics
  • Course units of 60 ECTS each year (optional)

Courses year 3

  • Project dynamical systems
  • Elective e.g.: Statistical Modelling, Mechanics and Relativity 2, Advanced Logic, Algebraic Structures
  • Bachelor's Project
  • Course units of 60 ECTS each year (optional)

The Groningen science and engineering programmes stand out for their academic excellence. The work pace in the first year is generally high and the courses contents demanding. The first year curriculum concentrates on laying a sound basis for our engineering and natural science disciplines. This allows our students to choose their specialisation tracks already in their second Bachelor's year.

Study abroad

  • Study abroad is optional
  • Maximum of 30 EC

(Binding) study advice

  • A minimum of 45 EC in the first 12 months ( binding )
  • A minimum of 60 EC in the first 24 months ( binding )

You will be offered study advice after first and second years of study. You can expect a positive result if you have earned more than 45 ECTS credit points (out of a total of 60 ECTS). If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative result, you will not be allowed to continue with your degree programme.

In addition, you are also expected to pass all your first-year exams by the end of your second year of study. If you don't, you will be issued a negative result and will have to leave the degree programme. You will receive preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you stand.

Please contact your study advisor as soon as possible if you have any questions about the BSA system.

N.B. Some degree programmes use a tutoring system; please check with your study advisor.
