The MSc by Research is exactly like a doctorate, but with a research project designed to take less time (normally two years, though it is possible to complete the requirements in a single year). It is not intended as a first step towards a DPhil, but rather as an alternative to a DPhil. There are no associated lectures, classes or written examinations. It can be in any of the subject areas for which supervision is available.

Initially, you will be admitted as a Probationer Research Student in the same way as those intending to do a DPhil, and the same standards are applied for admission for the two degrees. Thus it may be possible to switch between the DPhil and the MSc by Research. Few students opt for the MSc by Research and in most cases the decision is due to limitations on the period for which they have time or funding available.

The MSc by Research in Mathematics does not cover all subject areas within mathematics and therefore it is recommended that you enquire whether the MSc by Research in Mathematics is offered in the area/s of your interest before you apply.

Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved a first-class undergraduate degree with honours (or equivalent international qualifications), as a minimum, in mathematics or a related discipline. 

For applicants with a degree from the USA, the minimum GPA sought is 3.6 out of 4.0.

A previous master's degree is not required, though the requirement for a first-class undergraduate degree with honours can be alternatively demonstrated by strong performance in a master's degree.
