Machines have enabled many seemingly unrealistic ideas and have facilitated a multitude of challenging functions. Machine science is one of the oldest and most traditional of the engineering sciences characterised by a strong desire to think differently and effect change in the world.
Modern engineering is a combination of innovative, purposeful, and creative product development, a wide range of computer-aided design technologies, and techno-economically efficient production methodologies. At LUT, we have the expertise and ambition necessary to find new and sustainable solutions to fulfil the needs of science, business, and society. Our research is lifespan oriented, and our innovation process considers the entire value chain. That is how we provide optimal solutions to global environmental and economic challenges.
By providing highly skilled, well-rounded, mechanical engineering professionals, we supply the foundational elements needed to support modern, world-class manufacturing for a sustainable future.
Join our Master's Programme in Mechanical Engineering, and you will ensure your place at the frontline of modern technology.
Production designed for sustainable future.
The "Design and Manufacturing" major is targeted at students who wish to become future technological leaders in the mechanical engineering industry. In this major subject, the focus is particularly on future product design and production technologies. The programme aims to provide in-depth knowledge in design or production-related areas, such as machine design, steel structures, welding technology, laser technology and production, and sheet metal technology.
The programme maintains a balance between classroom lectures and laboratory work without forgetting the problem formulation and solving skills that are essential to any engineering discipline. It strives to develop creativity, professional independence, leadership and the capacity for continuing professional and intellectual growth. The programme also provides students with knowledge and skills for scientific doctoral studies in the field of mechanical engineering.
Look through the whole value chain of the packaging industry.
In the "Packaging Technology" major, the emphasis is on packaging materials, converting and packaging technologies, and the skills needed in the entire packaging chain. These major studies are taught as intensive education and can be pursued alongside full-time work. This programme is recommended especially for persons already working in packaging-related businesses or wishing to pursue a career in an industry dealing with packaging.
Although packaging-related courses exist in many Nordic universities, "Packaging Technology" is the only Master's level programme for packaging that leads to the M.Sc. degree. The objective of this programme is to educate experts in packaging materials, converting and packaging technologies, and the skills to work in production, development, sales and marketing functions throughout the entire packaging chain. Graduates obtain work as experts in product development and design, management of design and production projects, and technical sales in international business.
Degree structure and studies
In the Master's degree programme in Mechanical Engineering, there is a possibility to select between two majors, the major in Design and Manufacturing or the major in Packaging Technology.
The major in "Design and Manufacturing" corresponds to 120 ECTS credits and two years of full-time studies. The major in "Packaging Technology" is a part-time programme leading to the degree of Master of Science in Technology. Teaching is organized as intensive teaching periods (4-5 days at a time) during the academic year. Students have two years (90 ECTS credits) of coursework, and the Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits) will be conducted after the other courses have been completed. Both majors in the programme lead to the degree of Master of Science in Technology.
The degree structure of 120 ECTS consists of:
- general studies: 11-13 ECTS credits
- major subject studies: minimum 60 ECTS credits
- minor subject studies: 20 ECTS credits
- elective studies: minimum 27-29 ECTS credits.
Professionals and experts in their own field
The programme provides the foundation for both constructive design and production-oriented tasks and a variety of tasks in the packaging field. The professional tasks may include, for example, product development and design, management of design and production projects, and technical sales in both domestic and international business.
The professional scope often includes tasks in education, research and marketing as well as specialist responsibilities in technical inspection and project management. The programme also provides students with knowledge and skills for scientific doctoral studies in the field of mechanical engineering.

- Tuition Fee Scholarship, covering 25-100 % of the tuition fee (if applicable)
- Full Scholarship, covering the tuition fee and living expenses
- Living Cost Scholarship, covering the living costs
The scholarships are based on academic excellence and/or the need for financial aid to support the studies at LUT.
Scholarship Programmes
LUT General Scholarship Program
The scholarships offer you the possibility of being financially supported during your period of study at LUT. The aim of the LUT general scholarship program is to help you with your tuition fee or to get financial support for your living expenses in adequately completing your studies at LUT. The student applies for a scholarship in one of the categories mentioned above, while LUT takes care of granting the possible scholarship from this programme.
Partnership Scholarship Program for Russian Universities
The aim of the scholarship program is to create more extensive cooperation between LUT and a number of Russian universities on education and research and to strengthen these networks, as well as to transfer knowledge between the Finnish and Russian economies.
Students coming from these Russian universities do not have to specifically apply for this particular scholarship. The student applies for a scholarship in one of the categories mentioned above, while LUT takes care of granting the possible scholarship from this programme whenever the student becomes eligible for this scholarship.
The Fulbright-Lappeenranta University of Technology Graduate Award
The Fulbright student award competition is open to students from the U.S. who have at least a Bachelor's degree. The Fulbright scholarship has its own application process, application period and criteria.
