The Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies at the Faculty of Humanities offers an international master degree in Middle East Studies.
The purpose of the graduate programme in Middle East Studies is to provide thorough knowledge of contemporary historical and political conditions of the Middle East.
The student will acquire both historical overview of the Middle East and detailed insight into central issues of the shaping of the modern Middle East - issues which have contributed and will continue to contribute to form the Middle East, Middle East Studies, and the processes that will characterise the region and the research fields in the beginning of the 21st century.
The study programme will also focus on the Middle East involving issues concerning Mediterranean perspectives, cultural encounters, refugee problems and human rights issues and European and Danish integration.
Begins September 1st.

Job opportunities
The aim of the programme is to provide students with qualifications that will motivate them to seek jobs and functions in the Middle East and that will equip them to fulfill these including jobs associated with the Middle East in a European or Danish context. In addition, the aim is to provide students with qualifications that will equip them for tasks in the Danish, Scandinavian and European integration sector.
The graduates in Middle East Studies have been employed in many different areas. The secret services in Denmark (PET and FE) and the Danish integration sector (in ministries and municipalities) are the top scorers. The EU, international organizations and NGOs represent other areas where our candidates have found jobs. Typical job areas are:
* - Danish ministries, mainly the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for Integration, the Secret Services (PET and FE)
* - Danish municipalities and regions (the integration sektor)
* - international organisations, NGOs
* - the culture- and tourism sector
* - Danish companies operating in the Middle East
* - research, teaching, jobs in the information sector, media etc.
The Middle East programme gives you a systematic insight into Middle Eastern history, cultural and religious issues and political developments. Furthermore you get insight into economic and social conditions in the region. The programme contains also special study areas and a 3 month internship in the Middle East at a company, organization, an embassy or maybe an NGO.
Middle East Studies is offered as a 2-year Graduate programme. To be enrolled in Middle East studies, you must have completed your bachelor's degree in a relevant subject.

Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of MA (Master of arts) in in Middle East studies.
Programme structure
The study programme has its point of departure in a historical and political perspective but generally advances an interdisciplinary approach to Middle East Studies. This signifies that the region will be illustrated and analysed from various academic approaches.
The study programme has a prescribed period of two years of full-time study, but is designed to enable studying a few courses as independent modules that may become part of other study programmes or universities.
The study programme includes a placement in corporations, organisations or the like in the Middle East, or with connections to the Middle East.

Students should be able
1 to delimit and define a problem in the subject area
2 to investigate, analyse and solve technical problems with the aid of relevant academic theories and methods
3 to systematise complex knowledge and data and select and prioritise factors that are important for a given topic
4 to make a critical assessment of the subjects various theories and methods
5 to make precise and consistent use of concepts and terminology
6 to base their arguments on tenable academic foundations
7 to enter into qualified dialogue
8 to have a clear focus and consistency in carrying out their tasks
9 to take a critical stance with regard to sources used and to provide documentation for these using references, notes and bibliographies
10 to use IT as a tool both in searching for information and in oral and written communication
Subject-specific target skills:
Students should
* have a broad, solid knowledge of the modern Middle East in relation to modern history, culture and social conditions
* have a firm theoretical and methodological basis in modern history and in social and cultural analysis with particular reference to the academic history of Middle East research
* be able to develop and respond to academic issues relating to the Middle East in an independent and scientific manner
* be in a position to carry out project and communication assignments relating to the Middle East on a scientific basis and to present these to relevant working partners.
Intellectual competences:
Students should:
* be able to work and think critically and reflectively in relation to research issues in the relevant disciplines
* be able independently to formulate and present knowledge and viewpoints regarding the Middle East
Practical competences:
Students should:
* be able in a practical sense to take part in teamwork relating to research and communication about the Middle East
* be able to make concrete contributions to work involving information, planning or development for organisations, institutions and business concerns working with the Middle East on the basis of a solid knowledge about the area

The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.
BHJ Scholarship
Only available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg Campus
Six one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.
A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
