Course Content

During the autumn and spring semesters, you will be required to take four compulsory modules in:

* Research in Midwifery
* Advancing Midwifery Practice
* Professional Accountability
* Change and Innovation
You will also be able to choose one optional module from an approved list. Modules currently on offer include:
* Education Studies for Health Care Practitioners
* Counselling Skills in Midwifery
* Breast Feeding
* Effective Supervision of Midwives
Other optional modules may be added from time to time according to demand from our NHS partners.

Course Structure
The Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery is taught on a full-time basis over nine months or part-time over 18 months.
The course occurs in the autumn and spring semesters, during which you will be required to undertake four compulsory modules worth 90 credits and one optional module worth 30 credits.

The Academic Division of Midwifery offers the course at the Derby Centre. Some of the optional modules may be available at the Nottingham Centre.

Teaching methods and facilities used can include: enquiry-based learning, formal lectures, demonstrations and skills workshops, discussion groups, seminars, tutorials, computer assisted learning and portfolio learning.

We also offer an MSc in Midwifery, which includes the same taught components as the Postgraduate Diploma but also has a 60-credit dissertation requirement.
