Description

This programme is designed to prepare students to assume the responsibilities and accountability for contemporary practice as a registered midwife. In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working during the three year programme, there is shared learning between midwifery and nursing students in areas such as biological and social sciences, professional values, ethics, research and informatics.

The programme offers a balance of practice and theoretical learning in a variety of settings including the university campus at Avery Hill and hospital and community settings linked to local NHS Trusts. This will enable the student midwife to develop the necessary knowledge and skills required to meet the needs of women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. Each year students spend 50% of the time on placement where they are assessed by qualified practitioners.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To prepare award holders to apply for registration as midwives with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • To enable the student to achieve the outcomes identified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Midwifery Education (2009), including the competencies required to achieve the NMC Standards (Standard 17), the Essential Skills Clusters for Pre-registration Midwifery Education and the requirements of Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (2005), Articles 40 and 42.
