Mobile Communications

This exciting masters course has emerged from our internationally recognised expertise in digital communication systems, computer networks and wireless communications.

We work closely with industry and understand the skills and knowledge required to operate successfully in this field. Our specialised curriculum comprehensively covers the principles and techniques involved. It will equip you with the toolset needed to design and develop next generation mobile communication and wireless systems. As fresh technologies emerge in this ever-expanding field, you will have the essential formal theory and confidence in your practical skills to support your long-term career development.

The course is ideally suited to those pursuing a career in telecommunications, mobile communications, radio design or wireless networks and who already have a background in a related discipline such as electronics, computer science and applied sciences. It will also suit you if you have an engineering background and experience in a related industry or if you wish to prepare yourself for a research career.

Assessment
Examinations in January and May, with coursework throughout the programme. Project assessed by written report and viva voce in September.

Upper second class honours degree in electronic/ electrical engineering, physics or an equivalent qualification or equivalent industrial experience. Applicants with a good lower second class honours degree will also be considered. Candidates holding CEI Part II admitted.All applicants must have an acceptable qualification in English language before they can be admitted to any postgraduate programme. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa. We offer more than 100 studentships for taught and research programmes and many departments award their own scholarships and bursaries. Ask for details of these and possible sponsorship opportunities from the department concerned when you apply.

Departmental Bursaries and Scholarships

Many departments offer bursaries to eligible categories of students, and scholarships on a competitive basis, some of which cover all tuition fees. Up-to-date information is available from our website at or speak to the department concerned.

Loughborough Sports Scholarships

We understand the pressure of combining university studying with elite level sport.

In addition to the considerable benefits of first class coaching, access to world class facilities, strength and conditioning and sports medicine support, our Sports Scholarships offer financial support as well as access to a sports mentor, a life skills programme, and the opportunity for flexible study. Our Scholarship holders receive between £500 and £3,500 per year.

To be eligible to apply for a Sports Scholarship, you need to have a confirmed place to study at Loughborough, and usually be competing at least at junior international level.

Prizes

University and departmental prizes and bursaries are awarded in many departments to postgraduate students who perform exceptionally well in their work or who contribute to the development of cooperation between the University and the local community.

Prizes awarded to postgraduate students currently include the prestigious Loughborough University Graduate School Prizes each worth £400, and two John Guest Memorial Travelling Scholarships, each valued at £500, awarded to research students to give them the opportunity to extend their knowledge of their subject, either within this country or overseas.

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

The ALF is available to UK postgraduate (taught and research) students studying at least 50% of a full-time course who experience unanticipated and serious financial difficulties. To qualify, students must meet the same residence conditions as for student loans.

Postgraduate Taught Care Leavers Bursary

Care leavers from the UK who have recently graduated and want to progress onto full-time postgraduate study may be eligible for a bursary worth up to £2,660 which is intended for assistance with the cost of their study.
