For prospective India specialists: This English-language Master's degree programme unites perspectives from the humanities, the social sciences and economics. In addition to academic knowledge specific to India, you will acquire well-founded essential knowledge from Regional and Cultural Studies. This will be consolidated by a visit to India, integrated into the degree programme. Topics taught include social, cultural and economic phenomena of modern India. The programme is supported by the interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS).

The programme
The English-language master's degree programme in Modern Indian Studies provides in-depth specialized knowledge of the subject, the ability to work independently on subject specific and interdisciplinary research and to apply gained insights. The degree programme qualifies students for a successful career by provision of expertise, methodological and analytical skills and forms the basis for further studies in doctoral degree programs.

Subject focus

The teaching program at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Modern Indian Studies (CeMIS) in Göttingen is distinguished by the fact that the humanities, social science and economic perspectives on the Indian subcontinent are tightly integrated with each other, whereby the focus is on the preoccupation with the contemporary problems of Indian political, social and economic factors. Development economists, anthropologists, historians, indologists, political scientists, religious scholars and geographers are actively involved in this interdisciplinary teaching project. In addition to India-specific knowledge of these subjects, a sound knowledge of regional studies, and optionally the knowledge required in many branches of specialization in Indian languages, is also provided.

Degree programme structure
Two study programs are available under the master's degree program in Modern Indian Studies: "Development studies" with a focus on the political and economic development of India and "Social and Cultural Studies" with a focus on history, society, religion and languages of India. Students who opt to focus on "Social and Cultural Studies" and possess no basic knowledge of a modern Indian language can attend the required language courses offered during the course of studies. For students who opt to focus on "Development Studies, the language courses offered are optional. It is intended that the students spend the third semester of study at a university in India. It is also possible to study abroad at a European or foreign university with an academic focus on India.

Fields of work

The Master's degree programme in Modern Indian Studies qualifies students for jobs with Indian and transnational companies, development organisations, associations, government departments and agencies, non-government organisations, in tourism as well as in media and communications. In addition, the course also prepares the student for a career in research and teaching.

Language recommendation

Knowledge of a modern Indian language is recommended, but may also be acquired during the course of study.
