Molecular Biosciences

Description

Students who earn an undergraduate molecular biosciences certificate will understand the foundations of three fields of study: genetics, microbiology, and biochemistry, and will know how to use these disciplines to make informed decisions about current societal issues.

Certificate recipients will be prepared to work in both science and non-science careers, qualified for employment opportunities with non-profit organizations and government agencies involved in science making decisions, and be top prospects for private sector businesses that require employees with interdisciplinary scientific training.

Note: MBioS 101, one of the core courses required for the certificate, has a weekend lab component that takes place in Pullman, Washington

Suggested Schedule of Studies

The 18-credit certificate program is designed around four core courses required for all students, and an additional 3 credits obtained from a course which will require the student to apply the concepts of molecular biosciences to society. The certificate can be fulfilled through a mixture of on-campus and online course offerings or online courses only. A grade of “C” or better must be earned in all classes that apply towards this certificate.

Core (all four courses are required; 15 credits):

• MBioS 301 – General Genetics (4 credits; Prerequisites Biol 106, 107; one year freshman Chemistry)
• MBioS 303 – Introductory Biochemistry (4 credits; Prerequisites Chem 106 and Chem 345)
• MBioS 320 – DNA and Society (3 credits; Recomended one college-level Biol course)
• MBioS 101 – Introductory Microbiology (4 credits) OR MBioS 305+306 – General Microbiology+Microbiology Laboratory (Prerequisites: Biol 106, 107 and Chem 345 or c//) OR MBioS 305 + 304 General Microbiology+Microbiology and Molecular Biology Laboratory (Prerequisites: Biol 106, 107 and Chem 345 or c//)

Applicability of Bioscience (3 credits minimum):

• BIOLOGY 140 -Nutrition for Living (3 credits)
• ANTH 468 – Sex, Evolution, and Human Nature (3 credits; Prerequisites 3 hours Anth or Biol, completion of one Tier I and three Tier II courses)
• BIOLOGY 330 – Principles of Conservation (3 credits; Prerequisite either Biol 102, 106, or 107)
• MBioS 342 – Microbial Ecology (3 credits; Prerequisites Biol 106 and Chem 345 or c//)
• CRMJ 320 – Criminal Law
• PHIL 103 – Introduction to Ethics (3 credits)
• PHIL 365 – Biomedical Ethics (3 credits)

Total Minimum Credits: 18 credits

Students are expected to have already completed courses equivalent to one year of Freshman Chemistry for Science Majors, one year of Freshman Biology for Science Majors, and one semester of organic chemistry through an accredited institution of higher education before working towards this certificate.

Transfer Credits

The maximum number of credit hours earned at other institutions that may apply towards a WSU certificate shall not exceed ¼ of the total number of credit hours required for the certificate.

Requirements

• Students with a general interest in science and diverse backgrounds, including those majoring in business, communication, anthropology, and criminal justice.
• Students in non-biological science disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, or engineering.
• Working professionals who seek retraining or additional training.
• Middle and High School Science teachers who require continuing education for accreditation
