The Master Programme in Molecular Biotechnology is focused on the structure and function of biomolecules. The programme provides you with knowledge of how these vital molecules can be analysed, separated and modified.

It rests securely on Uppsala University's proud traditions within this subject are. In our courses, you will meet the researchers working with central biological issues and those who are developing tomorrow’s techniques and products. The exciting development within modern biology has its origin in the research carried out in technology, computer science and new interdisciplinary areas such as systems biology, bioinformatics and synthetic biology.

This development opens new opportunities for the systematic analysis and interpretation of complex biological systems that could not previously be done. For example, it is possible to examine and analyse all proteins expressed in a human being. However, the development seen in the life sciences also imply high demands on the knowledge and proficiencies of researchers with, for example, mathematics and data modelling.

Career

With a master degree in molecular biotechnology from Uppsala University, you will have excellent career opportunities both in academic research and in biotechnical industry in Sweden and internationally. A majority of our alumni so far have continued with PhD studies, in Sweden or abroad, after their master studies.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) with Molecular Biotechnology as the main field of study.

Year 1

After an introduction course, all students of the programme are offered a common courses package that is shared with the Swedish Master Programme in molecular biotechnology during the first year. A majority of the courses, such as Immunology and Protein biotechnology are focused on biomolecules and their use in biotechnological applications.

Courses

  • Molecular Biotechnology – starting course 15 credits
  • Immunology 5 credits
  • Genome Biology 5 credits
  • Evolution causes and consequences 5 credits
  • Macromolecular Machines 5 credits
  • Microbial regulatory mechanisms 5 credits
  • Synthetic Biology 10 credits
  • Protein Crystallography 5 credits
  • Protein Biotechnology 10 credits

Year 2

During the second year of the programme, there is a choise of courses and the possibility to specialise within a particular area, such as Protein Engineering and Molecular Biotechnology for Renewable Energy. You may also gain practical experience at a research institute or a company and thus take part in the development of a method or in basic research.

There is also an excellent opportunity to broaden the acquired biotechnology knowledge of other relevant fields such as bioinformatics and chemistry. The programme is concluded with a degree project at one of our excellent research departments, a government agency or at a biotechnology company.
