Can we accept that a small flaw can cause a car's brakes to fail? Can we deter those dangers to both people and the environment that are inherent in the complex products and systems surrounding us?
The objective of this Master's programme is to provide knowledge and skills to enable students in the development and operation of safe, reliable and easily maintainable systems. You will learn how products and systems can be used safely, and how technical faults can be avoided. Furthermore, you will learn how to plan and cost-effectively perform maintenance. The language of instruction is English.
This programme is unique in Scandinavia and builds on long experience from industry projects, teaching and research. The study is suited for people who like to identify and solve problems, have analytical skills, can work structured and systematically, and enjoy both theoretical and practical problems.
The study environment NTNU and SINTEF together constitute the largest academic environment in Europe within safety, reliability and maintenance, and has established the ROSS Gemini Centre.
Why study RAMS? Product and system complexity is increasing. Many technical products and systems are combinations of software, electronics and mechanical components. Also, the interactions between technical systems and the economical / social systems of our global society are becoming tighter and more inter-dependent
Career prospects Candidates within RAMS field are attractive to the market and have had no problems finding good jobs. The type of work varies quite a bit, as the competence is of great use to all kinds of industry that rely on reliability, availability, maintainability and safety.
Because project assignments and the master's thesis are regularly connected to practical problems within business and industry, students aquire a network that often results in job offers.
Many who complete the programme begin work in leading companies such as: Elkem, Hydro and Norske Skog, in addition to oil companies and suppliers to the oil industry. Others obtain positions in consultancies such as Det Norske Veritas, Safetec or Scandpower; and at NSB and Jernbaneverket you will find many RAMS graduates.
In many Norwegian companies the working language is Norwegian, hence improving your skills in Norwegian will increase the chance to get a position in these companies.

Duration: The program is a two-year program (four semesters).
The RAMS Master Program provides a broad coverage of RAMS, but also, through the project work and the master thesis, allows you to
* specialize in an area of interest within RAMS, and
* choose whether you want to specialize in RAMS challenges within a specific industry branch.
Notes:
* The master program is of 120 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)
* All course moduls are of 7.5 ECTS credits. In the first two semesters you have to take 4 course modules corresponding to 30 credits each semester.
* In the 3rd semester you have to take 2 course modules, and an individual project corresponding to 15 credits.
* In the last semester you have to write a master thesis during 20 weeks. The master thesis may be written in a company - in Norway or in another country.
About project work / masters thesis: In the project and masters thesis you may specialize within practical problems often in cooperation with industrial enterprises. Examples of problems are:
* How to design and operate a reliable subsea production system for oil and gas?
* How can we verify that an automatic train stop system is safe enough?
* How can we avoid blowouts on the Norwegian shelf?
* How do we make the maintenance of a business as cost-effective as possible?
Study Environment As a RAMS Master's degree student, you will be offered your own individual work-space in a new and modern building, access to modern facilities for seminars, lectures, and relaxation, as well as a modern computer lab. As one of maximum 30 students (from different countries and cultures), you will soon become acquainted with your fellow students.
Advantages The Master's programme builds on many years of experience from industry-related projects and research. In an evaluation of all engineering programmes in Norway conducted by an international expert panel, the group responsible for this Master's programme (RAMS group) received excellent marks in all the categories evaluated:
* scientific quality andproductivity,
* relevance and impact, and
* strategy, organization andresearch cooperation.
Together with scientists from the research foundation SINTEF, this group represents the largest research organization in Europe within RAMS.
Requirements for admission: This programme is open to students who have either: * completed three years of an engineering program * completed an engineering college ("ingeniørhøgskole") in Norway * Have a similar education from outside Norway [equivalent to a bachelor degree, or 180 credits in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS )]English language requirements: * TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 600/90 points on the paper based/internet based test * IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) with a minimum score of band 6.5 * APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language) examination with a minimum score of 3 points English Language Requirements IELTS band: 6.5 TOEFL paper-based test score : 600 TOEFL iBT® test: 90
NTNU charges no tuition fees, but regulations from the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration state that
all international students who are not citizens of EU/EEA/EFTA countries must document that they have enough money to live in Norway. For the 2017 intake this amount is NOK 103 950. Successful applicants who are given an offer of admission will later be asked to transfer this amount to NTNU's deposit account.
NTNU offers no scholarships.
