Description

Today, organisations are legally, financially and morally required to manage their risk baring activities. They must anticipate and prevent circumstances that might result in a negative outcome, while maximising the possibility of a positive outcome. Risk is an inherent part of everyday life and risk managers are prized for thier skills by organisations of all types and in all sectors.

Risk Management is the process whereby organisations identify the risks they face, evaluate the likely effect of those risks, introduce a range of control measures and finally monitor and evaluate the success of these measures. It involves the application of a number of techniques which combine both knowledge and problem-solving skills. You will learn the application of these practical techniques through the evaluation of real life examples such as the Piper Alpha disaster, the collapse of Enron and the recent crisis in the Global Banking System. The emphasis is on the practical application of specialist knowledge and skills, complemented by regular talks from industry-related speakers and corporate sponsorship.

Risk Management is now firmly part of the corporate and public sector agenda. GCU claims a truly unique status, as no other UK university offers a BA/BA(Hons) degree in Risk Management. As a result, leading companies approach the university directly when seeking to employ risk graduates.

Assessment Methods

Our approach to the learning, teaching and assessment of our students is tailored to the academic needs of our students while preparing them for the job market, as well as their ability to operate independently as life-long learners.

Our curriculum is designed to develop our students’ knowledge and understanding of risk management as an academic discipline, and to enable them to reflect logically and critically on risk theory and practice. In parallel with this, the curriculum is designed to promote employability. These skills are embedded throughout the programme and a wide range of methods are used to ensure the acquisition of professional, practical and personal development skills.

Teaching Methods

Direct industry awareness and experience is central to our teaching, through the use of guest lectures and presentations at all levels. This is particularly important for our new students, as it helps them understand the sector in which they will eventually find employment.

A member of the Risk academic team acts to act as a careers tutor for students and assists them with their employability skills and graduate job search. This tutor acts a focal point for both graduate job and student placement opportunities.

Between Years 3 and Year 4, our students have opportunities to undertake paid summer placements in a diverse range of organisations, providing invaluable experience in the development of both professional competence and the graduate skills and attributes required by employers.
