Description

The programme focuses upon how societies function and the various social, political, historical, economic and criminological issues, institutional frameworks and other factors which underpin those societies.

The programme is multidisciplinary and, after a broad introduction, allows students to specialise in Year 2 and Year 3, including the possibility of Major or Joint Honours combining two of the following: Economics, Politics, Sociology, Psychology, History, Criminology. You will also have the opportunity to acquire valuable presentation and research skills.

In Year 3, two placement modules are offered: one in Sociology: Community Links; and one in Politics: Politics Investigative Project - Politics in Practice.

The Social Sciences programme currently has student exchange agreements with three US institutions and one in Canada. The Erasmus/Socrates Intensive Programme offers possibilities for study in Europe.

Students who wish to take advantage of the opportunity for study exchange should apply during Year 2.

Due to the broad nature of this programme, a number of career paths are available. However, your choice of major subject will be important. Graduates have found jobs in areas as diverse as teaching, HR, marketing, social work, the police, politics, public administration, journalism, counselling, tourism and voluntary organisations.

Each year, a number of graduates continue onto postgraduate study in their main discipline.
