The binational Master of Arts Spanische Kultur und europäische Identität - Cultura y pensamiento europeo: tradición y pervivencia (Spanish Culture and European Identity) is an international and interdisciplinary research-oriented programme which arose from the cooperation between the University of León and the University of Bonn. The conceptual basis is a specific combination of Romance/Hispanic Studies and the European Intellectual History which is unique in Germany as well as in Spain.
The completion of the programme leads to the following qualifications:
  • advanced competencies in literary and cultural studies
  • advanced competencies in the historical roots of Spanish culture within European intellectual history and its dissemination
  • intercultural competencies

Educational organisation

The programme comprises philological studies in Bonn in the first year (Spanish literature, Medieval studies, translation, linguistics, cultural anthropology) and interdisciplinary lectures and seminars on the tradition and dissemination of classical European culture in León in the second year.
The Master's thesis is written in Spanish in a co-tutoring process. The graduates are awarded a double degree.

Course objectives

Students will be prepared for a career in academia or in national or international institutions.
The programme enables students to gain professional skills in text and media competencies, an outstanding knowledge of the Spanish language, intercultural competence, self-reliance, and the ability to identify and solve problems. These skills are necessary for students to pursue careers in the following fields:
  • public relations
  • academia (research and teaching)
  • cross-cultural management
  • print media, journalism, new media
  • libraries and archives
  • international, Spanish, Latin American institutions and agencies, (intercultural competence and language skills)
  • translating
  • tourism
  • business and consulting (outward-oriented marketing and consulting)
  • politics, international relations and cooperation (diplomacy, institutions of the European Union, international and non-governmental organisations)

Applicants are required to have an educational background with a focus on Spanish literature, culture, and language in their previous studies (Bachelor's degree or equivalent).

About 270 EUR per semester, including a public transport ticket for North Rhine-Westphalia
