The programme runs over one academic year and contains six courses of 7,5 credits each plus a 15 credits thesis. The courses are common to all students and that give a broad base in issues of concern for sustainable management. The courses cover several topical issues of business administration and also have inputs form other disciplines.

Programme teaching is influenced by the research profile of the entire Campus Gotland, which means the curriculum is motivated by the research conducted by the business department faculty members. You will also meet researchers from other disciplines who will give their view on issues of sustainability from their respective field of research.

Common to all courses is a pedagogic inspired by the education model called ”Liberal Arts”; This means that teaching is conducted in small groups; the student and the learning process being the primary focus. Other disciplines influence the content of the courses. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars and group work. The groups are often composed of students from different countries, which places instruction in an international atmosphere. The language of instruction is English.

You are provided opportunities to study both small and medium sized enterprises, governmental agencies and NGO’s. With a strong focus on academic writing this programme also provides a good base for continuing into research. It is a one year programme.

Career

The programme prepares students for a career as managers in international business as well as in public organizations. The programme gives a broad base to analyze various problems at the intersections of economic, environmental or societal development in regional and international contexts. Work tasks might include leading the development of strategies to assure accountability in multi-stakeholder contexts. The aim of the programme is to promote critical thinking, responsible future leaders and thereby to contribute to the development of sustainable management within organisations.

Degree

The programme leads to a Master of Science in Business and Economics with Business Studies as the main field of study.

First semester

During the first semester you will take four courses that run on half speed, which means you will read two courses in parallel. The first half period contains a course in philosophy of science and research methods in which you are encouraged to start planning for your master thesis work. Parallel to this you will take an introductory course about sustainability from a business perspective. The second period will contain two profile courses which treat problems connected to sustainable management.

Second semester

During the second semester you will be taking two more courses during the first period. The second period of this semester will be entirely devoted to the master thesis and connected seminars. The master thesis is a 15 credits independent work that will explore a particular problem of you own choice within the area of sustainable management.

A Bachelor degree equivalent to a Swedish degree of at least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies) with at least 90 credits in Business Studies including a bachelor thesis of at least 10 credits. Proof of skills in English to a level corresponding to English B in the Swedish secondary school. This is normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test with the following minimum scores:IELTS: an overall mark of 6.5 and no section below 5.5TOEFL: Paper-based: Score of 4.5 (scale 1-6) in written test and a total score of 575. Internet-based: Score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test and a total score of 90Cambridge: CAE, CPESelectionSelection will be based on a total appraisal of previous academic studies with emphasis on grades and course work relevant to the programme, and a personal letter of intent. Uppsala University provides several different scholarships for students. The scholarships cover exclusively the tuition fees for courses within the programme, i e 30 credits per semester.
