Description
The Professional Bachelor programme Technical Translation prepares individuals who possess all the basic skills required of a professional translator and who are capable of carrying out demanding translation and translation-related tasks in their profession and other fields such as engineering economics, management, civil engineering, architecture, information technologies and telecommunications etc. We find translators and interpreters taking on a wide range of responsibilities which sometimes are quite unexpected. They
are guides, language teachers, secretaries, managers, diplomats, ambassadors, advisers etc. Their work is always creative and very often they need not only the knowledge of linguistics, but other areas as well. We teach students to think broadly and critically, to develop judgment and be confident when applying their knowledge and skills.
The primary aim of translators is to enable cooperative intercultural communication.

You will master the theoretical basis of the chosen scientific-technical field, its specific terminology, as well as contemporary translator´s skills and the latest information technologies. You will be prepared for work in state and municipal institutions of Latvia, private structures of national economy in Latvia and in other countries and, after acquiring additional qualification, in institutions of the European Union. You will obtain
professional qualification which would enable you to continue your academic and/or professional education both in Latvia and in other countries, and develop your independence, initiative, as well as an ability to adapt to the constantly changing environment.

Course Content
The study programme is full-time, thus, the main methods are contact classes under the supervision of a teacher and independent work outside lecture time. Three forms of classes are offered within the framework of the study course, namely, lectures, seminars and practical classes. When planning translation classes, great emphasis is placed on involving all students in interactive work. To ensure a still greater efficiency some classes are held in computer rooms where students have access to modern
translation software and the Internet. The lecturers help the students develop skills of independent work with dictionaries, encyclopaedias, machine translation software. The themes of projects and reports are formulated in such a way as to raise the theoretical competence of the students and develop their analytical skills. With respect to the content, some of the compulsory and specialized subjects of the curriculum are as follows*:
