In this day and age, the term Web refers to the interconnection of people, services and systems (e.g. technical, economic, social and cultural interconnection). Web Science deals with phenomena in and of the Web and utilizes knowledge, concepts and methods from corresponding disciplines and perspectives (computer science, economics, business administration, law, design, social sciences, etc.). Web Scientists manage web projects and are capable of embracing holistic perspectives and out-of-the-box thinking on different web phenomena. The Masters programme includes modules such as:
* Foundations and Principles of the Web
* Economics
* Management
* Web Trust & Security
* Web & Society
* Web & Cooperation
* Design
* Development Projects for the Web
Graduates of this programme will find professional employment in a range of companies, scientific or public institutions and will manage projects related to the Web.
The Masters programme is designed as a part-time programme parallel to professional employment and makes extensive use of modern E-learning approaches, such as online lectures and seminars as well as computer-mediated communication and collaboration. The programme has a duration of 5 semesters:
* 1st semester: Foundations and Principles I & II (Web Elements, Strategy & Marketing)
* 2nd and 3rd semesters: four modules to be chosen from Web Trust & Security, Decision & Management, Web & Cooperation, Web & Society or Design
* 4th semester: Web Development Project
* 5th semester: the programme concludes with the Master Thesis.
Choose your own focus on Web Science! All the above mentioned labels (e.g Web Elements) are modules. From the first to the third semester all modules consists of a number of required and several optional courses. Choose from the optional courses the ones youre most interested in and by this define your own focus on Web Science. The curriculum puts great emphasis on project management skills by offering projects in nearly every phase of the program as well as on scientific and communication skills through seminar-based work. The fourth semester consists of a web development project in which you run a project dealing with a problem considered from different perspectives (e.g technical, economical, social, legal, design, trust). You attend a lecture in project management and enhance your practical skills as well as your conceptual knowledge. In the fifth semester you work on your Master Thesis which completes your studies and you graduate with the Master in Science.
For the most part, courses are held as online lectures, online seminars and online project work. Students will participate in online sessions on approximately two evenings per week during each semester. At the beginning and end of each semester, students will convene for an on-site weekend in Cologne.

Anyone interested in Web Science, who has completed her/his Bachelor studies in one of the following fields: computer science, business administration, design, law, psychology or social science (or others) and who worked afterwards for at least on year in the web domain.

The tuition fees for this master programme are 1400 per semester. The training master course is offered outside the capacity of on-campus courses, so it is not funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and must be self-sustained. There are no additional costs to tuition.
Accreditation
The course of studies Web Science at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences leads you to the Master of Science and is accredited by the German quality assurance agency ADAS.
