Water is essential for life on Earth, hydrologists work to find solutions to issues that influence the sustainability of water quantity and quality. Hydrologic science is the study of water in all of its manifestations, including weather, river basins, groundwater, glaciers, lakes, streams, permafrost, and water vapor. To understand how water is impacted by Earth's physical, chemical, and biological processes, hydrologists monitor and analyze water in the atmosphere, below the earth's surface, and in the ground.

Hydrology programs are taught at many universities around the world. On the StudyQA website you will find detailed descriptions of each program, tuition fees, and links to universities.

Program Description

The Hydrology degree includes the following subdisciplines: hydrometeorology, hydrogeology, water management, surface hydrology, groundwater hydrology and marine hydrology.

A degree in Hydrology gives a strong background in the field of earth sciences, marine science and geography.

Hydro engineers are essential professionals who help capture and distribute hydropower to local areas. Many individuals choose this line of work because they want to leave a lasting influence on the energy sector and frequently because they wish to lessen the environmental impact that other electrical power sources have.

During the program you will gain skills, including modelling and fieldwork, that help you comprehend the mechanisms governing the water cycle and equip you to handle hazards associated with water quantity (such floods and droughts) and water quality (such as pollution).

At the lower division level, you will complete foundational courses in mathematics, natural sciences and basic concepts of engineering. At the upper division, you will choose an area of concentration: surface hydrology, hydrogeology, remote sensing, water management or water quality. Depending on your special concentration, you may focus more intensively on running water, groundwater, water contamination and restoration or the use of computers and other technological systems in hydrology.

Levels of study

Hydrology can be studied within bachelor, master and PhD levels.

Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology  — Four Year Duration

Bachelor's degree programs in hydrology, sometimes called hydrologic science or water resource science, provide students with an understanding of regional and global water problems, along with water circulation and distribution. Undergraduate hydrology degree programs also cover water's impact on climate change, the movement of hazardous materials, and the upkeep of water systems for agriculture, industry, and human consumption.

Master’s Degree in Hydrology  — Two Year Duration

In the Master's program, you will learn how water can be treated not only efficiently, but also in a sustainable and economical manner. You will obtain knowledge and skills to address water-related challenges in the future. Many universities offer sub-specializations in areas such as surface water hydrology, vadose zone hydrology, watershed hydrology and water resource evaluation.

Doctoral Degree in Hydrology  — Three to Five Year Duration

Ph.D. programs in hydrology are designed for those who wish to pursue academic careers or in-depth study in a sub-specialty area. Students in Ph.D. programs participate in water research activities and usually complete and defend a dissertation presenting original research findings. Some programs require student to complete a minor in an area outside of hydrology, such as geosciences or engineering.

Career Options

Hydrology and Water Management is rather applied discipline, so graduates can find a perspective job after completing a Bachelor Degree, although some institutions require a Masters Degree.

A huge percent of Hydrology graduate start a career path in government. They can also apply for a job in management or scientific consulting services, or work in engineering area.

A lot of Hydrology and Water Management graduates holding a Bachelor Degree choose continuing education. PhG graduates can start a research career or become a professor in a university or other education institutions.

Graduates holding a degree in Hydrology can continue their education in the following areas: Environmental Biology, Environmental Toxicology, Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Psychology, Geology, Geography and other related disciplines.
