Palaeography is the study of ancient writing systems, the interpretation and dating of ancient manuscripts, and the examination of ancient handwriting. Instead of the linguistic content of texts, it is concerned with the forms and processes of writing. The art of decoding, reading, and dating manuscripts as well as the cultural backdrop of writing, including the techniques used to produce writing and books as well as the history of scriptoria, are all included in this field.

Palaeography is one of the most interesting areas to study.

One of history's supporting sciences is this one. It is crucial for comprehending, validating, and dating old manuscripts. But it typically can't be used to pinpoint dates with great accuracy. Due to the way it addresses two major issues, palaeography can be a crucial talent for historians and philologists. First, as each language's alphabet has undergone ongoing change, it is important to understand how to interpret each character as they were in different historical periods. Second, because scribes frequently employed abbreviations to write more quickly and occasionally to save space, a trained palaeographer must be able to decipher them.

The palaeographer must first be familiar with the language of the text (i.e., become an expert in the pertinent earlier varieties of these languages) and then have knowledge of the historical applications of different writing styles, writing conventions, and scribal or notarial abbreviations. Paleographers can distinguish between genuine documents and older or more modern forgeries with the use of philological understanding of the language, vocabulary, and grammar that were typically employed at a particular time or place.

The study of handwriting and the determination of the time periods in which a document or manuscript may have been created require a thorough understanding of writing instruments. Assigning a date and location of origin to the text may be a key objective, which is why the palaeographer must consider the manuscript's style, construction, and handwriting.

Using palaeography, it is possible to determine when a piece of writing was created.

Understanding local or family histories requires the use of palaeography as a crucial research technique.

Some people specialize in paleography, frequently concentrating on a single major civilisation like the Maya or Aztecs or a geographical region like Egypt, Greece, or Rome. These specialists read and try to translate ancient writings for a large portion of their time, but they also research how writing impacted earlier cultures. Many ancient cultures only permitted members of the religious orders to write, therefore paleographers frequently focus their attention on monks, priests, and other religious authorities.

Other professionals also find paleography to be useful in their careers. For instance, historians, particularly those studying ancient times, often find that an ability to understand ancient writings helps create a clearer timeline of historical events. Anthropologists and archaeologists also frequently study paleography to help place people, events and structures within cultural contexts.

Paleography extends far beyond translating the written word, however. It also studies the methodology of writing. This can include the study of ancient instruments, including chisels, quills, printing blocks and early pencils. It can also include the study of ancient inks and writing materials, such as papyrus and plant-based inks.

In addition to helping scholars understand ancient cultures and history, paleography can help experts differentiate between actual ancient documents and forgeries. In most cultures, the style of writing, including word use, sentence structure, word formation and handwriting, changed over time. Paleographers can use clues provided by these details to uncover fakes.

In addition to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, there are various advanced training courses.

These programs are designed for those who want to learn how to read medieval or contemporary parchment manuscripts. There is discussion of many different texts. Students' familiarity with scripts, abbreviations, and practical editing tasks are given special attention. The emphasis is on cross-disciplinary talents and the innovative sharing of knowledge.

Study and training in palaeography on a subject chosen in consultation with the Department are offered. Palaeography and codicology, manuscripts, the modern manuscript tradition, digital technology, and manuscript research are some of the topics discussed.
