With over 16,600 students, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences is the second-largest institution of higher education in the Hamburg region and one of the largest of its kind (university of applied sciences) in Germany. Founded in 1970, our roots go back to the 18th century. Our practice orientation guarantees a continuous adjustment of teaching based on current developments. Small groups, interdisciplinary projects and academic support ensure that our students feel at home at our university. Hamburg University of Applied Sciences offers a wide range of degree programmes within its four faculties: Engineering and Computer Science, Life Sciences, Design, Media and Information, and Business and Social Sciences. Practice orientation is our trademark: theory from lectures is put into practice in the laboratories, study projects are completed in the form of case studies, and close cooperation with industry ensures a direct link to the future field of work. The student body at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences includes 2,200 international students (13% of all students), representing over 100 nations.
Situated in the north of Germany and in the heart of Europe, Hamburg is Germany's second largest city (1.8 million inhabitants), and it offers an excellent quality of life with an international flair. With a lake in the centre of the city and the River Elbe, Hamburg is a city on the water. It is also one of Europe's greenest cities, with five million trees and numerous parks making life very pleasant. Hamburg is one of the most dynamic commercial centres in Europe, placing its strategic focus on six innovative segments: aviation (Airbus), IT and media, the international port and logistics, life sciences (biotechnology, medical technology and health care), nanotechnology, and renewable energies. Hamburg is a city of culture, with a vibrant theatre scene offering everything from big classical productions to fringe theatre. Hamburg is also famous for its ballet and is the third-largest musical city after New York and London. Fifty museums offer a varied programme of exhibitions and collections. The Beatles achieved international acclaim in the Hamburg Starclub, and today world stars are at home in the arenas and on the stages of the city.
The International Office at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences offers support for international students once they have enrolled at the university. Additional academic support will be offered by professors directly in the department.
