The Master Programme in biology will strengthen your competence base for meeting the requirements from employers outside the university, as well as giving a solid foundation for further research studies.
The biology education at the University of Gothenburg is one of the most popular in Sweden, and is given by four departments. The teachers and supervisors involved in the programme also perform research in many different fields and are involved in large international cooperations, which enables a tight association between education and research.
Career areas
Within the programme you have the possibility to focus your studies towards one of the degree projects given in biology: Systematical and Evolutionary Botany, Cell Biology, Ecological Zoology, Genetics, Immunology, Marine Ecology, Microbiology, Plant Ecology, Plant Physiology, Plant Molecular Biology, Zoological Physiology or Zoological Systematics and Biodiversity.
Degree
This programme leads to the degree Master of Science with a major in Biology. The degree will be achieved after you have fulfilled the requirements of 120 hec, at least 90 hec of which have to be at the advanced (second) level in biology, including a degree project of at least 30 hec. This means that you can include courses at the bachelor (first) level of up to 30 hec in your Master of Science degree.
The programme includes advanced level courses in biology or in other relevant subjects, and a degree project of 30, 45 or 60 higher education credits (hec). The degree project is either strongly connected to research and supervised by one of the research groups at the university, or it is performed outside the university, for instance at the County administrative board (Länsstyrelsen) or at companies within the biological field. The degree project can also be performed at another university in Sweden, or abroad.
A personal study plan, including your degree project and theoretical courses, will be put together with the coordinator of the master programme, orienting your studies into one of the fields: Ecology, Physiology, Systematics, Conservation or Cell Biology. The aim is to strengthen your subject specific competence as well as your common knowledge of the biological field and preparing you for working with for example research and development, within or outside the academic world, in areas such as conservation biology, fish management, biotechnology, drug development and food administration.
