Our society is rapidly becoming a networked information society. Enormous amounts of information and contacts are available anytime and anywhere. In light of the old adage that 'knowledge is power', one might conclude that this is a blessing. Nevertheless, the sheer quantity of knowledge has a downside: it is becoming increasingly difficult to ensure that the right information will reach the right person, and the systems that process this information are becoming more and more complex. Intelligent software is therefore needed in order to handle, process and store the data, as well as to support people in their efforts to use the available information to carry out complex tasks effectively and to enrich their daily lives with smart technology. The aim of the track in Media and Knowledge Engineering is to provide engineers with the skills they will need to develop and refine technologies for creating the necessary intelligent systems.
