• College of Computer Science

  NCTU started Taiwan’s earliest computer research program in 1960, and founded the first Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) Department in 1970. In the following year, the department developed the first indigenous mini-computer system. Then, in 1980, the department gave birth to a new Computer and Information Science (CIS) Department dedicated to the more theoretical pursues in computer science. Together, the two departments surpassed similar departments in the country by attaining a long list of distinguished achievements. For example, the two departments were ranked the 23nd worldwide in the amount of ESI academic publication about computer science throughout the past decade and then in 2005, moved up to rank number two worldwide in software engineering research publication; they also possess the largest numbers of highly-cited papers, the highest SCI paper count per faculty member, the most IEEE/ACM/AAAS/IET/IAPR fellows and the most national and international award winners.

  In 2005, the CSIE and the CIS departments were united once again in the formation of the country’s first College of Computer Science. The new college adopted a matrix organization model in order to promote multidisciplinary studies and collaborative researches. In this new organization, the two departments were merged and restructured into parallel research programs including the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Program, the Networking and Multimedia Engineering Program, and the Computer Science and Engineering Program. • College of Engineering

  The College of Engineering at the National Chiao Tung University was established in 1967.The college consists of three departments (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering), two institute (Environmental Engineering, and Nanotechnology), 11 degree programs of engineering (Degree Program of Industrial Safety and Risk Management, Degree Program of Automation and Precision Engineering, Degree Program of Construction Technology and Management, Degree Program of Semiconductor, Material and Processing Equipment, Degree Program of Environmental Technology for Sustainability, Industrial Technology R&D Master Program on Semiconductor Materials & Processes, Industrial Technology R&D Master Program on Imaging & Display, and Degree Program of Flat Panel Display Technology, The Degree Program of Nano Science and Engineering, Science and Technology of Accelerator Light Source Graduate Program, Master Program of Sound and Music Innovative Technologies), a machine shop, and four research centers (Manufacturing and Thermal Fluid Engineering Research Center, Manufacturing Automation Research Center, The Energy Technology and Management Research Center, and The Natural Hazard Mitigation Research Center). The machine shop, which is equipped with different kinds of CNC, and material testing machines, supports teaching and research activities in the university. The research centers collaborate with each other in conducting integrated research projects funded by the government and the local industries. 
  
  The college has highly qualified faculty members and among them more than 98% have earned their Ph. D. in the areas of their specialties. They are active in both teaching and research and also have close tie with the local industry. In the past three decades, the College has well-trained numerous graduates to serve the country that has been greatly benefited from their services and accomplishments. • College of Humanity and Social Science

  The College was established in 1995, in response to an increasing need to make the university a comprehensive higher educational institution. The aims, through its teaching and research programs, to equip students with creative and critical thinking skills in a variety of fields of the humanities and social sciences, to prepare them for thinking in a global perspective while remaining grounded in Taiwan.
  Now our college has been established almost for sixteen years and there are 60 faculty (2014) and 839 students (2014) in 8 academic units and cover a wide spectrum. 

  The education provided by the college focuses on both global and local dimensions. The college stresses avant-garde researches, and to equip students with the ability to think creatively and critically. We expect that our graduates will influence and contribute to the society in a multifarious and diversified manner.

• College of Biological Science and Technology

  Founded in May 2003, our college initially affiliated Department of Biological Science and Technology (since 1994), Institute of Biochemical Engineering (since 2001) and Institute of Bioinformatics (since 2002), aiming at educational training and research in the field of fundamental biological science as well as its applications to biotechnology. Our faculty have been conducting excellent interdisciplinary research and collaborations with experts in biology as well as physical and information sciences. Nevertheless, in addition to proteomics and molecular genetics, our expertise also covers bioinformatics and biophotonics, biopharmaceutical, biochemical, protein and enzyme engineerings, as well as industrial microbiology and chemical biology.

• College of Hakka Studies

  The establishment of the College of Hakka Studies was approved by MOE on March 5, 2004. In addition to International Center for Hakka Studies and Center for Science, Technology and Society, the College also consists of Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Graduate Institute Master Program for Humanities and Social Sciences & Population and Culture, In-service Master Program of Hakka Society and Culture, as well as Department of Communication and Technology (DCT). The DCT’s Master and PhD programs were then created to systematically garner Hakka knowledge on the basis of humanities & cultures as well as communication & technology. On the other hand, the International Center for Hakka Studies integrates academics with the resources of Hakka communities and works hand in glove with the real world of the Hakka population.

  The undergraduate curricula of the College of Hakka Studies focus on connecting professional courses of the Hakka culture and society with basic knowledge of humanities and social sciences. Moreover, they attach importance to the practical training concerning cultural industries and communication technology. The thematic courses emphasize the importance of cultivating students’ interdisciplinary and basic training on humanities and social sciences. In addition, students’ academic and practical abilities are also trained and enhanced by learning special topics from the Hakka population. The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and DCT possess highly competitive advantages in their respective relevant fields. In terms of graduate institutes, the College of Hakka Studies offers In-service Master Program of Hakka Society and Culture, Master Program of Population and Culture, Master Program of Communication and Technology (jointly held with Institute of Communication Studies), PhD program (jointly held with Institute of Applied Arts). Such programs are aimed to cultivate potential talents in interdisciplinary studies who are interested in the Hakka society and culture. The courses offered by these two departments are popular among NCTU students whose majors are not necessarily the Hakka Studies.

• College of Photonics

  The College of Photonics was established at Tainan campus of the National Chiao Tung Unviersity in 2009. This is the very first college of photonics in Taiwan. The college was established based on the solid foundation of outstanding research in the area of photonics, semiconductors and information technology in conjunction with the strong demand of research and development of the high-tech industry in Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), as well as the education of engineers and scientists needed for these industries. There are several research institutes in the college. These include Institute of Photonic Systems, Institute of Lighting and Energy Photonics, Institute of Imaging and Biomedical Photonics,Interdisciplinary Photonic Technology Research Center, and Biomedical Engineering Research Center.
  Optoelectronic industry has been the fastest growing sector among high-technology industries in Taiwan during the last decade. According to a recent report by the Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), the output value of Taiwan optoelectronic industries has reached over two thousand billion NT dollars in 2007 (while the output value of semiconductor industries is estimated to be one thousand and five hundred billion NT dollars). In other words, optoelectronic industry has become the largest high-technology industry in Taiwan. It is estimated that optoelectronic industry can still maintain 17% annual growth rate and its output value will reach five thousand billion NT dollars in 2011. The achievement is a result of the government’s policies on high education and high technology industry.
