How will I learn?

We use a mixture of teaching methods including traditional lectures and seminars, IT workshops, guest lectures, problem-based learning and group discussions.

In addition to this you will also be involved in a variety of practical work such as individual and group presentations, student-led seminars, role play, industry-sponsored competitions and project work.

These are included to help you develop a range of practical skills such as time management, effective presentation, communication, customer focus, analytical, entrepreneurial and team working.

You may also be taught in the Trading Room: a unique facility with 12 double screen workstations equipped with an industry leading software system which gives access to worldwide financial markets data and sophisticated analysis tools.

Contact time

On average you will receive 12 - 15 hours of teaching per week from a combination of lectures and seminars. You'll then be expected to increase your understanding of the subject area through independent study for each module.

Throughout your course the scheduled contact hours you receive will gradually decrease to undertake independent study and the research project in your final year. This will still remain at approximately 12 hours a week though and you will still have regular contact with your tutors.

You will also have time-tabled sessions for your induction at the beginning of the year, and sessions on employability and opportunities that you can get involved with whilst at University.

Personal tutor sessions

You will also have a number of one on one tutor sessions during each year, which will allow you to:

  • Discuss and gain feedback about your work.

  • Ask questions about the projects you're working on.

  • Raise any difficulties you are experiencing relating to your work, personal circumstances or your University experience.

Where will I study?

All students will attend lectures and seminars at NTU’s City site, in the impressive Newton Building, home to Nottingham Business School.

Virtual learning environment

You'll also use our virtual learning environment, NOW, which is a flexible web-based system that gives you 24-hour access to module learning materials and reading lists. It allows you to discuss work with tutors and submit coursework electronically from anywhere in the world.

Learning from industry experts

Our tutors have industry experience in their specialist field, which means you will gain practical insight into these fields and how real business decisions are made.

96% of students on BA Accounting and Finance (four years with a placement) agreed that staff are good at explaining things (National Student Survey 2013)

Funding

The University will be awarding an NTU Bursary of £1000 per year to eligible full-time UK home undergraduate students who start their studies at Nottingham Trent University in 2015.

This £1000 cash award to supplement living costs will be paid to eligible students who are all of the following:

  • are paying the new full-time home undergraduate tuition fee of £9000 (£6750 for full-time foundation degree programmes)
  • have a household income in their year of entry of £30,000 per year or less (as assessed by their national Student Finance Service)
  • are receiving a means-tested maintenance grant or special support grant from their national Student Finance Service.

This bursary will be available for each year of study, up to a maximum of three years for a three-year full-time degree course (including sandwich courses and courses with a work placement), two years for a foundation degree course, and four years for a four-year taught degree course. The bursary will be paid in those years where the students are charged the maximum home undergraduate fee for 2015 entrants.

There is no separate application process to apply for an NTU bursary. Your eligibility will be automatically assessed as long as you have applied and been financially assessed for maintenance funding from your National Student Finance Service.

Once your eligibility for the maintenance grant has been established, NTU should automatically receive confirmation of this if you have advised your National Student Finance Service that you will be studying at Nottingham Trent University and provided you (and your sponsors if applicable) have not actively withdrawn consent to share financial information with the University for the purposes of assessing bursary entitlement. If you are awarded a bursary, you will receive written confirmation from the University.
