WSU’s online Professional Science and Technology Writing Certificate gives students the ability to bridge the gap between the work of scientists and how the public understands that work.

Whether you work in media relations or grant-writing, risk-assessment or government communications, you’ll be able to explain the complexities of scientific advancements to national and international audiences. The 15-credit certificate also includes a variety of electives so you can tailor your education to your goals and interests.

Course Content

Program of Study
All courses are available online. The certificate requires five 3-credit courses. Three courses are required, and two are electives.
Required Courses:
(9 semester credits)

  • ENGLISH 301, Writing and Rhetorical Conventions
  • ENGLISH 402, Technical and Professional Writing
  • ENGLISH 495, The Rhetoric of Science and Technology (coming spring 2014)

Elective courses:
(6 semester credits)
The two elective courses can come from several fields. Among the options are:

Requirements

You're considered a non-degree student for admission purposes if you don't intend to complete a degree at WSU and are taking coursework for personal enrichment, to transfer to another college, or for a teaching endorsement. If you're not seeking a degree, there are a few limitations on financial aid and graduate study:

  • Non-degree students aren't eligible for financial aid.
  • If you decide to pursue a degree at WSU, you have to apply for regular admission status.
  • Course work completed as a non-degree student can't be applied toward a graduate degree, and you can't enroll in 500-level business classes or in courses at the 600, 700, or 800 level.
