The continuously increasing water needs of a growing world population are having a progressively adverse impact upon the Earth and its natural water resources. Sustainable water resources development within environmental and social limitations requires both qualified engineers and scientists as well as global scientific and professional cooperation. WAREM's internationally-recognised Master of Science programme was specifically developed to answer these demands.
The courses offered cover the following three main topics:
  • Groundwater Resources Management and Geohydrology
  • Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Management
  • Sanitary Engineering and Water Quality Management
The programme profits from the university's excellent research facilities in the water sector such as a modern hydraulic laboratory, the largest in-situ groundwater remediation installation, and Europe's largest prototype wastewater treatment plant. Additionally, Stuttgart and the surrounding area are served by two of the largest long-distance water supply systems in Europe.

Educational organisation

Water Resources Engineering and Management (WAREM) is a two-year Master of Science programme beginning in the winter semester of each year. The programme consists of three in-class semesters and a semester designated for research and thesis work.
The students have to complete four mandatory modules (21 credit points [ECTS]), two mandatory key qualification subjects (6 ECTS), five elective mandatory modules (out of nine) (30 ECTS), and six elective modules (33 ECTS). Students must obtain 90 ECTS before starting a Master's thesis (30 ECTS).
The modules consist of lectures, tutorials, and seminars, combined with practical work and excursions. Thus, students get a thorough overview and can easily find their field of interest and choose a specialisation.
For the double degree programmes with Chalmers University, Gothenburg, Sweden and University UiTM MARA, Shah Alam, Malaysia, a special study macro-plan has been created. Students joining these programmes are required to study two semesters in Germany and two semesters at Chalmers or MARA. This macro-plan ensures a compatible study programme.

Study abroad unit(s)

A semester abroad is recommended for German students.
A study period or local internship is optional for all students.

Internships

No compulsory internship is integrated into the study programme. However, students can arrange an internship independently if they are interested in doing so.

Forms of assessment

  • Written exams
  • oral exams
  • coursework exams
  • presentations

Enrolment fees

Approx. 170 EUR per semester

Costs of living

To cover living expenses, you will need about 750 EUR per month. This is for rent (approx. 300-350 EUR), health insurance for non-EU residents (approx. 80 EUR), the semester ticket for public transport (190 EUR/six months), food (approx. 200 EUR), other incidental expenses and working materials (approx. 100 EUR).

Job opportunities

Owing to its location in the heart of one of Europe's largest high-tech regions, there are many opportunities to find employment. Nevertheless, please do not come to Germany expecting to be able to finance your entire studies by working. The study load is very high and it is not always easy to find a part-time job. Non-EU citizens are allowed by law to work for a maximum of 120 full days (240 half days) per year. Students who are employed by the university in one of the institutes or departments ("Studentische Hilfskräfte") are exempt from this regulation, but other restrictions apply. You are not allowed to work during the first year while attending a German language class in preparation for the test of German as a foreign language (TestDaF).

Arrival support

A pick-up service is part of our welcome package. If you wish, you will be contacted before your departure, and if you arrive between 8am and 8pm, you will be met at Stuttgart airport or railway station and taken to your accommodation. Your host partner will also help you to deal with all formalities. This service is free of charge.

Services and support for international students

Cross-Cultural Mentoring Programme
The Office of International Affairs invites international degree students to sign up for the "Cross-Cultural Mentoring Programme". The programme is intended to ease initial challenges at the university as well as to offer study information, counselling services, subject-specific tutorials, courses, and activities during the whole study programme.
