In this course, you'll develop skills in the analysis, design and assessment of engineering structures under general, environmental, seismic and extreme loading conditions. Accredited by relevant industry bodies and designed to meet the needs of the construction industry, the course offers a wide spectrum of structural engineering principles, as you learn about issues relating to steel and concrete structures.


This degree is accredited as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a Accredited CEng (Partial) BEng(Hons) or an Accredited IEng (Full) BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree.

In this highly technical course, you'll develop skills in numerical simulation using a variety of software. You'll also learn failure analysis methods, the Eurocodes for the design of various construction materials under varied loads, research skills and the legal issues surrounding construction.

Based over one year, the course will involve lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions and independent study.

Trimester 1

Advanced Mechanics of Materials and FEA, Advanced Structural Concrete 1 - Analysis, Advanced Structural Steel Design 1, Forensic Engineering

Trimester 2

Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Design, Advanced Structural Concrete 2 - Design, Advanced Structural Steel Design 2, Foundation Design to Eurocode 7.

Completion of trimester 2 modules will qualify you for a Postgraduate Diploma.

Trimester 3

Masters Dissertation

Students of this course are eligible for the Best Timber-related dissertation prize.
