The study of art history reconstructs the historical milieu of works of art in order to gain insight into the values, beliefs, and overall level of development of a culture. Through close examination of paintings, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, photography, video, and performance art, art historians are able to draw comparisons, assess the significance, and identify trends which help us understand who we are, where weпПХve been, and where we are going. The Art History program in CarletonпПХs School for Studies in Art and Culture specializes in European and North American art, architecture, and photography, including works by Canadian and native Canadian artists. Carleton maintains its own collection of Canadian art, an extensive slide library, the largest university gallery in Canada, and an impressive collection of art history research materials in the Library. Also, the UniversityпПХs location in the nationпПХs capital places you in the heart of CanadaпПХs major cultural resources, providing unparalleled access to both personnel and research materials. Applied work experience is available.
