Art History is distinct among liberal arts in that in addition to more common approaches such as historical, psychological, or social analysis, it also includes visual analysis. Politics, religion, literature, science, philosophy and history are all natural features of the terrain in art history, as are social issues ranging from gender and sexuality to class, race, and economics. The Art History Discipline at Morris examines all of these as part of the process of evaluating and learning from the art of the past.

Art history at Morris offers you the advantages of both a close-knit department and a broad curriculum. Most classes are small, offering engaging dialogue and in-depth treatment of topics. The number and range of the course offerings and the expertise of the faculty at Morris are noteworthy. Specialized courses on African American art, women artists, the history of photography, portraiture in the early modern period, Chinese art, Islamic art, and in-depth treatments of the art of antiquity, among others, are offered regularly.

The art history major course requirements include three core courses (Principles of Art, Ancient and Medieval Art, and Renaissance to Modern Art) that survey the history of art through the ages. The curriculum concludes with the "capstone" course, where students reflect on the work they have done in the major. Art history majors will also complete at least two introductory studio art classes. This component offers the chance to understand how art is made and introduces students to some of the creative and technical challenges faced by the artists.

Core courses and electives are repeated regularly, and there is typically no requirement to take courses in any given order. This gives students the freedom to move through the curriculum following their interests and needs. Because of this, and because it fosters muti-faceted, interdisciplinary thinking, art history is a frequent choice for those wishing to double major.

Course Content

The purposes of the art history curriculum are to develop student understanding of some of the historical traditions in the visual arts, to teach students methods of analysis and interpretation of works of art, and to help students discover the rich and complex relationships of art to other aspects of culture. Students are encouraged to have direct contact with art by means of studio art courses, class field trips, gallery internships, and study abroad experiences.

To apply, your high school transcript should include the following:

• Four (4) years of English;
• Four (4) years of math including one year each of elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, and geometry;
• Three (3) years of science with one year each of biological and physical science;
• Three (3) years of social studies, including United States history;*
• Two (2) years of a single second language.*
