Asian Languages and Literatures

The Asian Languages and Literatures program at Carleton College offers students a comprehensive and immersive study of the rich linguistic and cultural traditions of Asia. This interdisciplinary program explores the history, literature, and contemporary societies of Asian countries through the lens of their languages and cultural expressions. Students have the opportunity to develop proficiency in one or more Asian languages, including but not limited to Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, and Southeast Asian languages, supported by rigorous coursework in language acquisition, literature, linguistics, and cultural studies. The program emphasizes not only linguistic skills but also critical understanding of the social, political, and historical contexts that shape Asian societies today.
