In this one-year specialisation you will study the region from a social science approach, including perspectives from history, sociology, economics, media studies and political science. Expertise in Leiden on modern Asia covers all Asian regions: East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asia. The programme allows students a considerable degree of freedom. You will be able to choose an individual specialisation by country, region, discipline or field. Within the politics, society and economy specialisations, knowledge of an Asian language is not required, but you will have the option of taking an intensive modern language course at beginner's level in Japanese, Indonesian, Chinese, Korean or Hindi.
