Description
The Bachelor of Audiometry aims to provide both academic knowledge and practical training which will equip students with the necessary skills and expertise to pursue a career in Audiometry. This degree is articulated with the Diploma of Hearing Device Prescriptions and Evaluations at TAFE (Diploma in Audiometry) and is the only one of its kind in Australia at the undergraduate level. Candidates gain vocational training with TAFE and theoretical knowledge in relevant academic areas with UNE.
On completion of the course students will possess an understanding for the broader framework of developmental and physiological psychology, the roles they play in hearing, and appreciate theoretical principles underpinning audiometric assessment and rehabilitation techniques.

Course Aims
The Bachelor of Audiometry aims to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge which will equip students with the necessary skills and expertise to pursue a career in Audiology. The course aims to bridge a gap that currently exists in Australia between vocational training as an audiometrist and postgraduate training as an audiologist. Students will have the option to either focus on technical/biological complements to their Psychology major through Bioscience units or to focus on more conceptual/theoretical complements through Linguistics units.

Knowledge of a Discipline
Graduates will possess a body of knowledge relevant to their fields of study such as in psychology, bioscience and linguistics. This knowledge will be taught in lectures, unit materials and online activities and will be assessed throughout the degree by a range of different activities and assessments (e.g., lectures, practicums, essays, reports, online labs, exams).
Communication Skills
Communication skills will be taught and practised in lectures, tutorials, practicums and online activities. These skills will include oral, online and written communication skills that are appropriate for graduates to use within the professional workplace.

Information provided within each unit embeds current global knowledge within the relevant discipline (e.g., textbooks and lectures).
Information Literacy
Graduates will be taught how to recognise relevant information and to use appropriate media, tools and methodologies to locate, access and use information. Through assessment tasks, they will learn how to critically evaluate the sources, values, and validity of information, and to use information in critical and creative thinking.
Life-Long Learning
The development of intellectual capacity and critical thinking skills will be fostered in lectures, online material and other unit activities. Through completing these activities graduates will be provided with the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write and discuss research findings in relation to social issues and contexts.
Problem Solving
Graduates will be able to examine social problems and solutions within different social contexts.
Social Responsibility
Graduates will be taught about their professional responsibilities as a researcher to provide balanced and accurate research and data findings and interpretations. Graduates will critically evaluate research findings and interpretations given a social context.
Team Work
Across a range of units graduates are required to work in groups and/or together in various activities (e.g., LMS discussion forums), both face-to-face and/or online and will learn the importance of participating in discussions in a professional, respectful and ethical manner.

A candidate shall:
(a) hold a Diploma of Hearing Device Prescriptions and Evaluations or Diploma in Audiometry from TAFE; or
(b) hold a Certificate IV in Audiometric Assessment from TAFE and concurrent enrolment in the Diploma of Hearing Device Prescriptions and Evaluations or Diploma in Audiometry from TAFE.
Work Experience
No work experience is required.
Practical, Clinical or Work Experience : Clinical training is provided in the Diploma course through TAFE; students may also need to include WORK300 in their program unless such practicum arrangements have been made.
