Contemporary biotechnology aims to address and understand today's pressing challenges and scientific issues: human, plant and animal health insurance and their adaptation to the environment; food shortage; and sustainable solutions for waste treatment and renewable energy. This course concentrates on behavioural knowledge and theoretical insights into biological compounds, processes, organisms, and the systems and interactions between them. In your final year you're going to be able to run a variety of subject, study and lab investigations. You'll graduate with a good theoretical foundation along with hands-on skills in molecular cloning, chemical engineering, disease prevention and treatment, drug production, food production, environmental sustainability and much more. You will be armed for diverse careers in the biotechnology industry. In your final year, you can decide to either major in Biology or Microbiology.

Depending upon the major area of study chosen, graduates can apply for professional membership of: The Australian Society for Microbiology, The Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
